French rite is one of the bodies of Freemasonry founded in France. It is linked to the birth of Freemasonry in France in 1786. It takes the name to distinguish from Scottish Rites from which it was initially formed. It is a regimen of seven degrees and is often felt to be the ‘lay’ rite of Freemasonry practiced in Grand Orient De France.
